Why Anchoring Skills Matter on a Charter

Anchoring is the single most important seamanship skill for charter sailing. You will anchor your boat every night, sometimes multiple times per day, and getting it wrong has immediate consequences -- from a sleepless night of dragging to damaging coral reefs or, in the worst case, running aground while the crew sleeps. The good news is that reliable anchoring is straightforward once you understand the principles and adapt your technique to the bottom you are working with.

Modern charter boats are generally equipped with oversized anchors and generous chain rode, but the equipment is only as effective as the person deploying it. Understanding bottom types, scope ratios, and setting techniques will transform anchoring from an anxious exercise into a routine procedure.

Understanding Bottom Types

Sand

Sand is the most common anchoring surface in popular charter destinations and is generally the most forgiving for less experienced sailors. A well-set anchor in firm sand can hold extraordinary loads -- far exceeding what charter conditions will demand. The key distinction is between firm, packed sand and loose, sugary sand. Firm sand allows the anchor to dig in quickly and hold securely. Loose sand, common in the Bahamas and parts of the Caribbean, requires more patience and a longer set to ensure the flukes have buried deeply enough.

When anchoring in sand, let the anchor touch bottom, then slowly reverse the boat while paying out chain. Once you have the desired scope, apply moderate reverse throttle for 15 to 20 seconds while watching a fixed point on shore or monitoring your GPS position. If the boat holds position, increase throttle to about 1,500 RPM and hold for another 10 seconds. A properly set anchor in sand will not move during this test.

Mud

Mud bottoms are common in rivers, estuaries, and certain protected harbors. Anchors set easily in mud -- sometimes too easily, creating a false sense of security. The challenge with mud is that holding power varies enormously depending on consistency. Thick, clay-like mud provides excellent holding. Thin, silty mud can allow even a well-set anchor to slowly plough through the bottom during sustained wind.

In mud, deploy extra scope a minimum of 7:1 rather than the standard 5:1 and set the anchor with a strong, sustained reverse burst rather than a gradual pull. The extra scope keeps the pull angle low, which is critical because mud offers less resistance than sand to an anchor that begins to lift. After setting, check your position against GPS waypoints every 30 minutes for the first two hours to confirm the anchor is not creeping.

Rock and Coral

Rocky bottoms present the greatest anchoring challenge. An anchor on rock may appear to be holding when it is merely hooked on a ledge or wedged in a crevice. This type of hold can release suddenly when wind direction shifts. In many charter destinations, anchoring on coral is prohibited outright to protect reef ecosystems, and mooring balls are provided instead.

When you must anchor near rock, look for sand patches between rock formations. Even a small patch of sand 10 feet across can provide reliable holding if you place the anchor precisely. This requires clear water, polarized sunglasses, and a crew member on the bow directing placement. If no sand is visible, consider using a trip line attached to the anchor crown so you can retrieve the anchor from the opposite direction if it becomes jammed.

Sea Grass

Sea grass beds are common throughout the Mediterranean and Caribbean. Anchoring in grass is problematic because anchor flukes tend to skid across the surface of the grass mat rather than penetrating to the sand or mud beneath. If your anchor sets in grass, it may hold in light conditions but pull free when loads increase.

The technique for grass is to use the weight of extra chain to help the anchor penetrate. Pay out scope, then reverse firmly at higher RPM than you would use on sand. The initial pull needs enough force to drive the flukes through the grass layer and into the substrate below. Some sailors will raise and reset the anchor two or three times in grass until they are confident the flukes have broken through.

Scope Ratios: The Foundation of Holding Power

Scope is the ratio of anchor rode length to the depth of water plus the height of the bow roller above the waterline. On a typical charter catamaran with a bow roller 4 feet above the waterline anchoring in 15 feet of water, your total depth measurement is 19 feet.

  • Calm conditions, overnight: 5:1 minimum. In our example, that means 95 feet of chain.
  • Moderate wind (15 to 20 knots): 7:1. That increases to 133 feet.
  • Strong wind or unsettled forecast: 10:1 if swinging room allows.
  • All-chain rode: Chain's weight creates a natural catenary that improves holding angle. All-chain rode can use slightly less scope than rope-and-chain combinations.

The critical principle is that holding power increases dramatically as the angle of pull becomes more horizontal. At 5:1 scope, the pull angle at the anchor is roughly 11 degrees from horizontal. At 3:1, it rises to 18 degrees, and the anchor is far more likely to break free. Never anchor with less than 4:1 scope under any circumstances.

Setting the Hook: Step by Step

  1. Choose your spot. Motor slowly upwind of where you want the boat to lie. Account for the scope you will pay out plus the length of the boat.
  2. Come to a stop. Let the boat drift to a standstill or slow to bare steerage-way.
  3. Lower the anchor. Do not throw it. Lower it under control until it touches bottom.
  4. Drift back. Allow the boat to drift back naturally while paying out chain. Do not motor backward while chain is still running out -- this can cause chain to pile on top of the anchor.
  5. Cleat the chain. Once your desired scope is out, snub the chain on the windlass or a cleat.
  6. Set in reverse. Apply gentle reverse throttle, increasing gradually over 30 seconds to moderate power.
  7. Verify the set. Watch your GPS track or take bearings on fixed objects ashore. The boat should come to a firm stop with the chain bar-tight.

Mediterranean Mooring and Stern-To Technique

In the Mediterranean, marina space is at a premium and the standard practice is to moor stern-to the quay with the anchor deployed ahead. This technique takes practice but is expected at most Med harbors.

The Approach

Motor slowly toward the quay with the stern facing the dock. When roughly three boat-lengths from the quay, drop the anchor and begin paying out chain while continuing to reverse toward the dock. A crew member at the stern should have dock lines ready. As the stern approaches the quay, secure stern lines to the dock while the helmsman takes up tension on the anchor chain from the bow.

The final position should have the anchor holding the bow off the quay while the stern lines keep the boat close enough to step ashore. Leave enough chain to achieve at least 3:1 scope -- less than ideal for open anchoring, but acceptable given the protection of a harbor and the additional holding provided by the stern lines.

Common Mistakes

The most frequent error is approaching too fast. The maneuver requires slow, controlled movement with plenty of communication between bow and stern. The second common mistake is not paying out enough chain, which results in the anchor dragging and the bow swinging toward neighboring boats.

Anchor Watch: Protecting Your Sleep

Even a well-set anchor deserves monitoring, particularly in your first night at a new anchorage. Modern anchor watch apps such as Anchor Watch or DragQueen use your phone's GPS to alert you if the boat moves beyond a preset radius. Set the alarm radius to about 50 feet beyond your expected swinging circle, and keep the app running through the night.

Physical checks remain valuable. Before turning in, note the bearing and distance to two or three fixed points -- a light on shore, another anchored boat, a distinctive landmark. If you wake during the night, a quick glance at those references will tell you instantly whether you have moved.

In crowded anchorages, also consider what lies downwind if you do drag. Anchoring with an escape route open water downwind rather than a reef, beach, or other boats provides an additional margin of safety that costs nothing but forethought.
