Phuket to Phang Nga Bay

Depart from Yacht Haven Marina on Phuket's northeast coast and motor north into the sheltered waters of Phang Nga Bay. Weave among the towering limestone karsts, stopping to kayak through sea caves and into hidden hongs (collapsed cave lagoons). Visit the iconic Ko Tapu, known as James Bond Island, and anchor for the night near Koh Panak, where bioluminescent plankton light up the water after dark.

Phang Nga Bay to Koh Yao Noi

Sail south through the bay to Koh Yao Noi, a tranquil Muslim fishing island that has largely escaped mass tourism. The island sits in the middle of Phang Nga Bay with spectacular views of karst formations in every direction. Anchor off the east coast and go ashore to explore rice paddies, rubber plantations, and a genuinely local way of life. Dine on fresh seafood at a simple beachfront restaurant.

Koh Yao Noi to Phi Phi Don

Set a southerly course for the Phi Phi Islands, a passage of roughly 25 nautical miles. Approach Phi Phi Don from the north through Tonsai Bay, where the dramatic twin bays and soaring cliffs create one of the most breathtaking natural harbours in Asia. Phi Phi Don to Phi Phi Leh

Make the short hop to Phi Phi Leh, the uninhabited sister island. Maya Bay, made famous by the film The Beach, reopened with strict visitor quotas to protect its recovering ecosystem. Enter by boat in the early morning before crowds arrive. Afterwards, swim into Viking Cave at Loh Samah Bay and snorkel the vibrant reef at Pileh Lagoon, a cathedral-like cove enclosed by vertical limestone walls.

Phi Phi Leh to Krabi / Railay

Sail east to the Krabi coastline and anchor off Railay Beach, accessible only by boat and flanked by sheer limestone cliffs that make it a world-class rock climbing destination. Explore Phra Nang Cave Beach with its stalactite-adorned cliff face and offerings to the sea goddess. Kayak around the headland to Tonsai Beach, a laid-back climbers' paradise. Fresh coconut shakes and Thai curries await ashore.

Krabi to Koh Lanta

Continue south along the coast to Koh Lanta, a long, relaxed island with beautiful west-coast beaches and a charming Old Town of stilted wooden houses built by Chinese and Malay sea-gypsy traders. The 18-mile sail passes through the Four Islands group, where a low-tide sandbar connects Tup Island to Chicken Island. Anchor at Kantiang Bay on Lanta's southwest shore for a spectacular sunset dinner.

Koh Lanta to Phuket

Begin the return passage north to Phuket, a 40-nautical-mile sail that takes most of the day with favourable winds. Alternatively, if your charter allows, end at Koh Lanta or Krabi for a one-way return. Arrive back at Yacht Haven Marina in the late afternoon for checkout. Stop at Ao Po Grand Marina for a farewell Thai dinner overlooking the bay as the sun sets on your Andaman adventure.

Getting There

Phuket International Airport (HKT) is a major hub with direct flights from European cities, the Middle East, Australia, and all Southeast Asian capitals. The airport is on the north end of the island, approximately 30 minutes from Yacht Haven Marina and 45 minutes from Chalong Bay. Taxis and private transfers are readily available. Some charters depart from Krabi or Koh Lanta, accessible via Krabi Airport (KBV).

Weather

The sailing season runs from November to April during the northeast monsoon, which brings dry weather, sunshine, and gentle winds of 8-15 knots. Seas are calm and visibility excellent. The southwest monsoon (May-October) brings rain, stronger winds, and rougher seas, making it unsuitable for most charters. December through March is the optimal window with the driest conditions and most reliable winds. Water temperature is a warm 28-30 °C year-round.

Provisioning

Full provisioning is available at Makro, Tesco Lotus, and Villa Market on Phuket. Most charter companies offer pre-order provisioning packages. Fresh tropical fruit, seafood, and Thai ingredients are available at local markets on every island. Prices are significantly lower than in the Mediterranean or Caribbean. Water is cheap but should be purchased as drinking water (do not use dock water for drinking). Ice is available at most piers.
