The Challenge and Reward of Sailing Photography
A sailing charter puts you in some of the most photogenic settings on Earth: turquoise anchorages, dramatic coastlines, golden-hour sails, and underwater worlds. But the marine environment is the harshest imaginable for camera equipment. Salt spray, humidity, constant motion, and the reflective glare of open water conspire to damage your gear and sabotage your images.
The difference between a phone full of disappointing snapshots and a gallery of images you actually want to print comes down to preparation, timing, and a few techniques specific to shooting on and around boats.
Protecting Your Gear From Salt and Water
Salt water is the enemy. A single drop of salt spray on a lens element, if not cleaned promptly, will etch the coating within days. Salt mist corrodes metal parts, shorts electronic contacts, and degrades rubber seals. Humidity below deck promotes fungal growth inside lens elements. This is not hypothetical; it happens routinely on sailing trips.
Essential Protection Measures
Carry a dry bag rated to at least IP67 for storing your camera when not in use. Pelican cases and similar hard-shell waterproof cases provide the gold standard of protection but are bulky. For most charter photographers, a quality roll-top dry bag (15 to 20 liters) holds a camera body, two lenses, and accessories, and stows easily in a cabin or cockpit locker.
Keep a pack of silica gel desiccant sachets in your dry bag to absorb humidity. Replace or recharge them every two to three days in tropical conditions. A microfiber cloth dedicated to lens cleaning should live in a sealed plastic bag; if the cloth itself absorbs salt spray, it becomes an abrasive rather than a cleaning tool.
After every shooting session on deck, wipe down the camera body and lens barrel with a slightly damp (fresh water) cloth, then dry immediately. Pay attention to the lens mount, battery compartment seal, and card slot cover. At the end of each day, leave the camera in the dry bag overnight rather than on the chart table where humidity and condensation are highest.
UV and Protective Filters
A clear UV or protection filter on each lens provides a sacrificial layer against salt spray. A scratched or etched 30-dollar filter is far preferable to a damaged 800-dollar lens element. Keep the filter clean with a lens pen (the brush end removes salt crystals gently before you use the cleaning pad).
Best Times to Shoot
The quality of light determines the quality of your images more than any equipment choice.
Golden Hour (First and Last Hour of Daylight)
The warm, low-angle light of sunrise and sunset transforms every anchorage. Colors saturate. Textures become three-dimensional as side-lighting rakes across waves, sails, and shorelines. On a sailing charter, golden hour often coincides with departure (early morning) or arrival at your evening anchorage, both excellent moments to have the camera ready.
Blue Hour (20 to 30 Minutes After Sunset)
The period just after sunset produces a deep blue sky that is extraordinarily photogenic, especially with the warm glow of cabin lights and anchor lights on nearby boats. This is the time for long-exposure shots of the anchorage, reflections on calm water, and atmospheric silhouettes.
Midday Challenges
The overhead tropical sun between 11:00 and 15:00 creates harsh shadows, blown-out highlights, and flat-looking seascapes. Counterintuitively, this is the best time for underwater and downward-looking shots, as the high sun penetrates the water column directly, illuminating reefs and sand below. For above-water photography, use midday for detail shots in shaded cockpits rather than sweeping landscapes.
Composition Techniques for Sailing
Include the Boat
The most compelling sailing photographs include the yacht as a compositional element. Shoot along the deck with the bow or rigging framing the scene ahead. Capture crew members silhouetted against the sky while trimming sails. Use the helm station as a foreground element with the destination island behind. These compositional anchors tell the story of sailing, not just of scenery.
Shoot From the Water
Some of the best boat photography happens when you leave the boat. Jump in the dinghy, swim to a nearby rock, or anchor off the stern and shoot the yacht in its anchorage from 50 to 100 yards away. A yacht at anchor with a mountainous island backdrop, shot from water level in the dinghy, is a classic image for good reason.
The Horizon Line
On the water, a tilted horizon is instantly noticeable and immediately looks amateurish. Enable the grid or level overlay in your camera or phone. On a moving boat, shoot in burst mode and select the frame where the horizon is closest to level. In post-processing, a slight rotation crop is acceptable, but try to get it right in-camera.
Use Crew as Subjects
People bring scale, narrative, and emotional connection to sailing images. A wide shot of someone standing on the bow looking toward an island conveys the experience of sailing far more powerfully than the empty seascape alone. Shoot candidly: the helmsman concentrating on sail trim, someone reading in the cockpit, a swimmer climbing back aboard. Ask permission before posting images of others, but do not ask people to pose unless you are specifically shooting portraits.
Drone Photography and Regulations
Aerial shots from a drone can produce spectacular images of your yacht in its anchorage, sailing with a coastline below, or overhead shots of crystal-clear water revealing the seabed. However, drone regulations vary significantly by destination, and ignoring them can result in confiscation, fines, or worse.
Key Regulations by Region
Seychelles: Drone use requires a permit from the Seychelles Civil Aviation Authority (SCAA). Apply at least 14 days in advance. Flying without a permit risks confiscation and a fine of up to 20,000 SCR (approximately 1,500 USD). Flights are prohibited over national parks and marine reserves without additional authorization.
French Polynesia (Tahiti): Drones are regulated under French aviation law. Recreational drones under 800 grams can be flown without registration, but flights over people, near airports, and above 120 meters are prohibited. Many popular anchorages near Papeete fall within restricted zones. Remote atolls and motus are generally permissible.
Greece: Drones require registration and insurance. Flights near archaeological sites (most of the Cyclades) are prohibited. Maximum altitude is 120 meters. Always check the Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority's updated restriction maps before flying.
Croatia: Registration required for drones above 250 grams. Flights prohibited over national parks, nature parks, and built-up areas without permission. The Kornati Islands National Park and Mljet National Park are no-fly zones.
Caribbean (BVI, Antigua, Bahamas): Regulations are generally more relaxed but evolving. Check current rules before departure. Most jurisdictions prohibit flights near airports and above 400 feet.
Practical Drone Tips
Launch and recover from the dinghy or swim platform, not from the moving yacht. Set a home point before takeoff. Keep the drone within visual line of sight. Be aware of wind speed at altitude, which is often significantly higher than at sea level. A drone falling into salt water is beyond repair. Carry spare batteries and keep them in a cool, dry location aboard.
Underwater Photography
Clear charter waters practically demand an underwater camera. The options range from budget waterproof cases for phones to dedicated underwater camera systems.
Phone Waterproof Cases
Cases from brands like AxisGo or SeaLife SportDiver provide genuine waterproof housing for recent smartphones and add physical buttons for the shutter and volume controls. Prices range from 60 to 200 USD. They work well down to 30 to 50 feet and are adequate for snorkeling. Test the seal in fresh water before trusting it in the ocean.
Action Cameras
GoPro and DJI Action cameras are inherently waterproof, compact, and produce excellent underwater video and stills. Their wide-angle lenses suit the underwater environment well. A red filter (10 to 15 USD) corrects the blue-green color cast when shooting without a strobe below 15 feet.
Compact Underwater Cameras
Dedicated underwater compacts such as the Olympus Tough series or SeaLife Micro HD offer superior underwater image quality compared to phones and action cameras. They shoot RAW files, offer manual exposure control, and have built-in underwater scene modes. Prices range from 350 to 600 USD.
For underwater shots, get close to your subject. Water absorbs light and color rapidly, so images shot from more than three to four feet away lose contrast and saturation. Shoot upward toward the surface to capture sunburst effects and silhouettes of swimmers or the boat hull.
Post-Processing at Sea
Editing on the boat is a pleasant evening activity while at anchor. A tablet with Lightroom Mobile or Snapseed handles most adjustments efficiently. Focus on white balance correction (underwater and blue-hour shots often need warming), highlight recovery (bright sky reflections), and gentle clarity or dehaze adjustments for atmospheric haze. Back up your files to a portable SSD each evening. Memory cards and camera sensors do not respond well to the marine environment, so having a second copy of your images provides essential redundancy.
The best sailing photographs are not the ones with the most expensive gear. They are the ones taken by someone who had their camera accessible, protected, and ready at the moment the light, the scene, and the story aligned.
